The Sarasota County STEM Fair celebrates our scientists, technicians, engineers, and mathematicians.  Students from grades 3-12 are encouraged to enter an experimental or engineering project at their school based STEM Fairs.  Winners of school fairs move on to our Sarasota County STEM Fair to compete with students in their grade level from all around the county.  Our top projects in Middle and High School have the opportunity to move on to the State Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF).  This will be held April 2-4, 2024 in Lakeland, FL. Select wiinners at SSEF are invited to participate in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). This will be held in Anaheim, CA from May 12-17, 2024.

What to Expect During the Fair

Judges will view student virtual display over the course of three days, January 29-31, 2024.  Using our posted judging rubric, judges will evaluate projects using both the virtual display and the student submitted video. From the results of this initial judging, students with top projects will be invited to participate in the final judging, or Round 2, on February 22, 2024. During this round of judging, between 8am- 1pm, a panel of 2-3 judges will interview all students in a particular category or grade level to determine top honors. The arena will be filled with students from grades 3-12 showcasing their talents.

Elementary Mathematics and Technology
Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change, including investigating math rules or principles or math in nature. Technology is the study of practical application of science used to improve the quality of life including the sciences of computer hardware, software, and applications.
Elementary Earth and Space Science
The study of sciences related to the planet Earth (Geology, minerology, physiography, oceanography, meteorology, climatology, speleology, sesismology, geography, atmospheric sciences, etc.)
Elementary Engineering
Engineering projects are design projects which determine a need for a new or improved product or process. This type of project REQUIRES the development of a new idea or product that will solve a problem or need. This type of project follows the engineering design process.
Elementary Life Science
The study of plants, animals, and other living organisms, including sciences such as biology, botany, and zoology.
Elementary Physical Science
The study of non-living things, including sciences such as chemistry and physics.
High School Animal Sciences
Study of animals and animal life, including their structure, function, life history, interactions, classification, and evolution.
High School Behavioral and Social Sciences
The science or study of the thought processes and behavior of humans and other animals in their interactions with the environment studied through observational and experimental methods.
High School Biomedical and Health Services
This category focuses on studies specifically designed to address issues of human health and disease.
High School Cellular/Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
The studies of the structure, function, intracellular pathways, and formation of cells. Studies involve understanding life and cellular processes specifically at the molecular level.
High School Chemistry
The science of the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter.
High School Earth and Environmental Sciences
The study of sciences related to the planet Earth (Geology, minerology, physiography, oceanography, meteorology, climatology, speleology, sesismology, geography, atmospheric sciences, etc.)
High School Engineering
Studies that focus on the science and engineering that involve movement or structure. The movement can be by the apparatus or the movement can affect the apparatus. The study of the characteristics and uses of various materials with improvements to their design which may add to their advanced engineering performance. Studies involving electrical systems in which information is conveyed via signals and waveforms for purposes of enhancing communications, control and/or sensing.
High School Environmental Engineering
Studies that engineer or develop processes and infrastructure to solve environmental problems in the supply of water, the disposal of waste, or the control of pollution.
High School Intelligent Machines, Robotics and Systems Software
The study or development of software, information processes or methodologies to demonstrate, analyze, or control a process/solution.
High School Mathematics and Computational Sciences
The study of the measurement, properties, and relationships of quantities and sets, using numbers and symbols. The deductive study of numbers, geometry, and various abstract constructs, or structures.
High School Microbiology
The study of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and pathogens.
High School Physics and Astronomy
Physics is the science of matter and energy and of interactions between the two. Astronomy is the study of anything in the universe beyond the Earth. Studies of renewable energy structures/processes including energy production and efficiency.
High School Plant Sciences
Studies of plants and how they live, including structure, physiology, development, and classification. Includes plant cultivation, development, ecology, genetics and plant breeding, pathology, physiology, systematics and evolution.
